IKEA plans to install 39,000 GS Solar panels in UK.


Ikea Group, the world’s biggest home-furnishings retailer, bought a wind farm in Scotland and plans to install 39,000 solar panels on its U.K. stores as part of a goal to get all of its energy from renewable sources.

Ikea bought a 12.3-megawatt wind farm in Huntly, northeast Scotland, from Good Energies Capital Inc., Chief Sustainability Officer Steve Howard said in a phone interview. That’s enough to cover 30 percent of Ikea’s U.K. electricity use. The solar panels, totaling 2.1 megawatts, will be fitted on 10 stores, providing an average of 5 percent of each shop’s power, he said.

The Huntly purchase adds to wind farms the company already owns in Denmark, France and Germany. By building up a renewables portfolio, Ikea is seeking to reduce its exposure to fluctuating energy prices, which cost the company 1.2 billion euros ($1.7 billion) to 1.5 billion euros a year, Howard said.

“The principle strategy is to match the direct energy consumption of the business with electricity production from renewable assets,” Howard said yesterday. “We can certainly see a point in time where renewables are likely to be the most cost-effective form of energy generation.”

The solar panels, which will cost “close to 4 million pounds” ($6.5 million) to fit, are made by China’s GS Solar Fujian Co., according to Howard. Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S supplied the turbines for the wind farm, he said, declining to comment on the purchase price.

Renewables Certificates

Ikea isn’t carbon-neutral, and may sell so-called renewable obligation certificates earned by the wind farm, Howard said. Under the government’s renewables obligation, electricity suppliers are required to source an increasing portion of their power from alternative sources such as the wind and the sun, and must hold tradable certificates to show this.

The company will also claim feed-in tariffs -- or guaranteed prices paid for electricity from renewables -- for the solar power it generates, Howard said. Ikea now derives about 50 percent of its energy from renewables, including the green energy it buys, he said.

“The direction of travel for us is 100 percent renewable,” Howard said, adding that no deadline has yet been set. “We’re likely to hit 70 to 80 percent by 2015. We’ve built up sufficient experience in the area to be more confident in the timeline, so we will set a timeline in the next few months.”

Ikea now owns 67 wind turbines providing 127 megawatts of capacity, and is looking to add more British wind farms to its portfolio, Howard said.

“The wind turbines in the U.K. are a first step, and we’ll expand on that,” he said. “This is a message to developers out there that we’re looking for good projects in the right places, and we’re keen to diversify in terms of the regions.”

Solar prices up 3- 5% in August.


Will Crystalline panels price rise Q1. - 2012?

AS Solar cell makers have notified clients that August quotes will go up by 3-5% to reflect the rising cost of production materials, according to industry sources.

As orders of solar cells stabilize in the third quarter, many solar cell makers have been returning to full capacity. According to industry sources, the first-tier solar cell firms plan to increase quotations by 3-5% to above US$0.80/watt in August. The industry is also optimistic about fourth quarter.

Industry sources noted that many solar cell makers have notified clients that the wafer firms can no longer operate at a loss so the price of solar wafers is likely to increase, therefore, the quotes of solar cells will likely to follow suit.

The order visibility from a month ago was only until September, causing many solar cell firms to refrain from increasing quotes even as gross margins were low, added industry sources. Many firms increased capacity utilization to lower variable costs. The solar wafer suppliers have been trying to increase price but downstream cell firms have low order visibility and inventory of solar wafers, so the price increase was unsuccessful.

Current quotations of solar cells that have conversion efficiency up to 16.4-16.6% is US$0.80/watt. If the price increase is successful, the quotation will increase to US$0.82-0.85/watt.

Taiwan-based solar cell makers are Motech, Gintech, Neo Solar Power, Solartech and E-Ton Solar. The price of solar cells decreased about 30% in second quarter when demand was scarce. The demand has been returning in third quarter as the market faces less uncertainty.

Thin Film V Crystalline.

I not sure how much knowledge you have about Thin film PV; so I would like to take this opportunity to explain the differences between our Thin Film PV and Crystalline.

As you can see from the table below there are pro’s and con’s for both systems, the con’s for thin film is the area it requires. But now the UK Government are reducing large scale systems FIT; roof space is not a problem for the commercial clients. They still want PV, and the best system for then now will be a 50 kWp system (nominal power = 49.72 kWp).

The pro’s, our system can be used on most facing roofs (S, E and W) even on North facing roofs you will achieve generation.

Our system does not require direct sunlight, as they work of the ambient light waves, via our Triple layer amorphous geranium silicon (a-Si).

GS @ Inter Solar NA

GS Solar fourth consecutive year at this show, and it was one of the best.

We generated a lot of interest with our Thin Film panels. It maybe for a solar panel, they look great, can I say even "sexy"; also announcing a new 60 watt model coming out in the next few weeks..

Or was it that GS Solar US office is now open in Arizona.

The differences I found in the US compared to the UK, was the size of the US projects; most utility scale projects were in the 100MW range.
Where here in the UK our Government has curtailed the solar farms and opted to promote PV into the residential marketplace.

looking forward to next years show, and GS Solar's steady growth with in the US PV marketplace.
